What are tox injections?
Tox injections are the injectable delivery of medication to help relax muscles. Although it sounds a little scary, botulinum toxin is an FDA-approved medication widely utilized for various medical purposes, including aesthetics, migraines, spasms of the eyelid (blepharospasm), cervical dystonia, hyperhidrosis, and bladder leakage.
At BellaLisse, these neuromodulator medications are primarily used for cosmetic purposes to help smooth wrinkles of the face caused by age-related skin thinning and repeated muscle contraction (dynamic wrinkles). They will not work well on static wrinkles, such as those caused by sleep position or skin laxity. Typical areas of cosmetic treatment include frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.
Tox injections can also be utilized to help control excessive or problematic sweating that may occur on the hands or armpits, such as in hyperhidrosis.
How does it work?
Botulinum toxin works by temporarily weakening the underlying muscle’s ability to contract, thus relaxing the overlying skin. The primary benefit is that skin in the area of the injection will appear smoother and less wrinkled. Results generally last three months but longevity may vary between individuals. Risks of toxin injection, although rare, may include a feeling of heaviness for the duration of effect and bruising in the area of injection.
When used for excessive sweating, tox injections help block the chemical signals that turn the sweat glands ‘on.’ Noticeable improvement in symptoms may occur in as little as 2-4 days, with full effects generally noted at 2 weeks. The duration may last 4-7 months, on average, with some individuals reporting effects up to 14 months.
